Everyone was cheering now. Gregory and Mikayla hoisted me on their shoulders. They carried me back around to the front, where Hailey was just coming to find us. She took the ALL CLEAR sticker from me and put it right there in the front window. Then she locked the Brophys’ door and left the house as though she’d never been there in the first place.

“Way to go, Isaiah!” she said. If she’d had her laptop with her, I could have spelled out my thanks in oh-so-many words. Instead, I just blew a kiss and a big smile her way, but I think she got my drift.

So now that we’d figured out how to save our entire mischief from a disaster of epic proportions, there was still the second most important question of the day.

“What’s for breakfast?” Gregory asked. “I’m starving, and that kitchen is as empty as a hatched egg.”

“We’ll be just fine,” said James the Wise, who was there now to congratulate us. “Everything the Brophys took out of the kitchen is in the trash bins behind the garage. There’s more than enough to feast on for the time being.”

Which sounded just great to me. Everything always tastes better outdoors anyway.

As for the Brophys? When they came back, I don’t think they even noticed that the ALL CLEAR sticker in their window had a few tiny teeth marks around the edges. It didn’t take long for them to return to their deliciously sloppy ways around the house, either. We’re being extra careful these days, but life has gone fairly well back to normal.

It’s certainly possible that we’ll have to go looking for a new home someday. But if it comes to that, I’m confident that my mighty mischief will be up to the task.

And you know me. I’m always ready for a new adventure.
